SNHU recently celebrated two first-generation graduates whose paths to higher education highlight the university’s flexible learning options. Silvonna Silvestre thrived in SNHU’s on-campus community, while Alexis Flores found success in a flexible, project-based program.
On-Campus Learning
Silvonna Silvestre, a first-generation college graduate from West Warwick, R.I., earned her BA in psychology with a concentration in child and adolescent development. She found her niche on campus, serving as a resident assistant and first-gen mentor, participated in Greek life, and joined service-learning trips to Utah and Puerto Rico. Her engagement with the campus community has inspired her to consider graduate studies and a career in higher education.

Competency-Based Learning
Alexis Flores of Somerville, Mass., found success through SNHU’s competency-based program offered in partnership with Duet. After stepping away from traditional college, he re-engaged through Year Up and completed over 60 projects while balancing two jobs. His dedication awarded him a BA in management, making him the first in his family to earn both a high school diploma and college degree, with exciting career prospects in property management.
Reaching Goals at SNHU
Silvonna and Alexis represent the many pathways SNHU students take to reach their goals – whether through a traditional campus experience or a flexible, competency-based program – and the impact of those opportunities for first-generation learners.
